Child Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a spinal curvature. That is, when the spine bends sideways or twists when looking from behind.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is your teenager’s spine crooked?

Is your teenager starting year 7 at school?

While being measured for their uniform, please check the shape of their spine. Many parents only realise that their teenager’s spine has grown crooked when the school tunic doesn’t sit properly.

Does my child’s spine need to be perfectly straight?

No. A straight spine may offer some “mechanical” advantages, but there is a “normal healthy” range where “small curves” are quite acceptable.

Is a spinal curvature or scoliosis a serious problem?

Most curves do not cause health problems, but a curve well outside that healthy range may lead to muscle and joint damage in addition to heart, lung and digestive disorders. The most serious curve – Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) – usually starts during the rapid growing teenage years. Scientists don’t know why, but different parts of the spinal bones appear to grow “out of phase” causing an unsightly twisting.

How many children have a scoliosis?

Recent Australian studies show about 12 in every 1000 teenagers need professional care for a scoliosis. More girls are affected than boys.

How can you tell if my child has a scoliosis?

Chiropractors use a safe, simple screening test. We look closely to see whether shoulders and hips are level and then watch for changes in rib shape as the patient leans forward. If there is any doubt x-rays are recommended.

When should children be checked for scoliosis?

All school girls should be screened for scoliosis in years 7 and 9. Boys should also be checked.

What happens if a curve is found?

It depends upon the person’s age and size of curve. Those with small curves may benefit from posture advice, exercise and some gentle care to encourage healthy spinal movement. A small number of patients may require specialist care such as bracing or surgery.
